Most people who use their computer on a daily basis most certainly know about social networking websites. Although these sites started as very popular meeting places for teenagers, now adults and even the elders started to get acquainted with them. Truth is, through these social networking websites, one can stay in touch with everyone they know much easier than in real life. All one has to do is to send a message or comment on a photograph in order to let their friends know that they’re there. In real life, sometimes schedules don’t permit friends to meet so often, so these websites can prove to be useful every once in a while. One of the social networking websites that has the most success is Facebook. Starting from children to teenagers, adults and even elders, just about everyone has an account on this website. But what exactly is the history of this popular online meeting place?
Interestingly, Facebook did not start as a social networking place. Actually, the whole thing started more like a project, and not a serious one. Mark Zuckerberg, who is the founder of this world-wide popular website actually started a similar project called Facemash. This initial website was meant to use pictures of all Harvard students and users were able to vote between two pictures to choose their favorite. Later, after this project was stopped, Zuckerberg created Facebook, that immediately started to be used by almost everyone in the dorm rooms at Harvard. In a short amount of time, both Yale and Stanford students started using it. Other students joined Mark Zuckerberg in his endeavor to improve the website that at the time was still called thefacebook. It wasn’t until 2005 in August that the official name of Facebook was finally adopted. It is known that the domain name of Facebook.com was then purchased for a sum of $200,000. At first Facebook was not available for people worldwide, but only for some colleges, universities and companies in the United States, Canada and a few other English-speaking countries. Today, the limits of using Facebook have been virtually eliminated, although there is a limit of about 70 languages available on the website for now.
When people start using this great social networking tool, they probably don’t realize that everything was made possible by a college student. It is interesting to find out the history of a website that is so popular, especially since almost all of us are acquainted with it. As a free social networking website, Facebook is bound to reach even greater success in the future.
